Compassion Focused Parenting Support
Parenting can be a hard task but can bring immense reward. We know that often in life things can happen to us, and to our children, that we do not ask for. As parents there is a significant responsibility that for some parents mean they can be very critical about themselves and feel they are to blame for their child’s pain, suffering and difficulties. We also know that this is not their fault.

Compassion Focused Parenting Support, which utilises Compassion Focused Therapy, takes an evolutionary perspective to make sense of how our brains have developed over time, both through evolution but also through our own life experiences, to better understand how we relate to ourselves and to our children.

Compassion Focused Parenting Support is a multi-family group programme, meaning we bring parents together in a single group session. The programme offers six group sessions lasting ninety minutes that are attended in sequential order.

Across the 6 sessions we aim to explore;
-
What compassion is and compassion within families,
-
The links between our evolution, development and parenting,
-
How this applies to mental health and neurodevelopmental difficulties such as ADHD and Autism
-
How to apply a compassion focused approach to parenting, and
-
How to develop your own Compassionate Kitbag
A key element to compassion focused work is self-practice and self-reflection. We will do this through a variety of practices that can be taught to your children but we will explore these through play and games. Following this, an initially facilitated, peer support group will be available for one hour, once per month. This is an offer of continued support beyond the six weeks.

As this is ‘support’ and not ‘therapy’ the time together will be focused on building an understanding of our tricky brains and finding ways to better manage them. For most of us even taking a snapshot of this work may be polarising. Although in this setting our task is to build awareness and sensitivity, we cannot forget that true compassion is all about turning back towards the source of pain and suffering, within ourselves and others, and both to the harm we have received but also caused.
For those who wish to progress beyond Parenting Support, or for those who are seeking Family Therapy, we would welcome you to consider our Compassion Focused Family Therapy programme.
